Where did the discussion of alternates take place? I'd be interested to see that. It looks like there are two main driving pressures here:

  • avoid Perl and other fat implementations, but still be flexible
  • integrate with ACF (is it planned to also be usable without ACF? or will Alpine configuration generally be tending towards an expectation that ACF is present?)

Some notes of my own on alternate systems:

Shorewall
is Perl-only since v4.4.3
Firehol
needs Bash, allegedly slow at startup (though I've never had such troubles)
ufw
is this too inflexible?
